In accordance with article XII(1)(a)(ix) of the Convention, the amendments shall enter into force on 1 January 2008 unless, prior to 1 July 2007, more than one-third of Parties to the Convention or Parties the combined merchant fleets of which constitute not less than fifty per cent of the gross tonnage of the world‟s merchant shipping of ships of 100 gross tonnage or more, have notified their objections to the amendments. As at 1 July 2007 one objection1 had been received and the amendments accordingly entered into force on 1 January 2008.
