The purpose of thi s Agreement is to encourage and facilitate cooperation between the European Community and Canada in fields of common interest (those listed out in article 4) so as to support research and development activities to advance science and technology in those relevant fields. Areas of cooperation include, among others, agriculture, fisheries, forestry and environment. Cooperation shall be conducted in accordance with the following principles: (a) mutual benefit; (b) timely exchange of information; ( c) effective protection of intellectual property and equitable sharing of intellectual property rights; (d) balanced realization of economic and social benefits. Article 5 defines the modalities of cooperation and activities to be carried on to promote cooperation. Furthermore, a Joint Science and Technology Cooperation Committee (JSTCC) is set up under article 6.
