Note I

BRITISH EMBASSY

TOKYO

8 June 1979

Your Excellency,

I have the honour to refer to the Agreement between the Government of the Gilbert Islands and the Government of Japan concerning Fisheries off the Coasts of the Gilbert Islands signed at Tokyo on 26 June 19781 (hereinafter referred to as "the Agreement") and, taking into account that the Proclamation by the Governor of the Gilbert Islands dated 10 March 1978, which is referred to in the preamble to the Agreement, has been superseded by a Proclamation dated 18 April 1979 extending the fishery limits of the Gilbert Islands around the entire territory of the Gilbert Islands, have further the honour to propose, on behalf of the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which is responsible for the international relations of the Gilbert Islands, that the preamble to the Agreement shall be amended by deleting the words "Proclamation by the Governor of the Gilbert Islands dated 10 March 1978" and replacing them by the words "Proclamation by the Governor of the Gilbert Islands dated 18 April 1979".

If the above proposal is acceptable to the Government of Japan, I have further the honour to suggest that this Note and Your Excellency's reply in that sense shall be regarded as constituting an agreement between the Government of the Gilbert Islands and the Government of Japan in this matter which shall enter into force on the date of Your Excellency's reply.

I avail myself of this opportunity to renew to Your Excellency the assurance of my highest consideration.

MICHAEL WILFORD

Her Britannic Majesty's Ambassador

His Excellency Mr. Sunao Sonoda

Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Tokyo
