Excellency:
I have the honor to refer to the Interim Agreement on salmon stocks originating in the Yukon River, set forth in the exchange of notes between the United States and Canada on February 3, 1995. By its terms, the Interim Agreement shall remain in force until December 31, 1997, unless the Parties agree in writing to extend it.
I further have the honor to propose that the Interim Agreement be extended through March 31, 1998. The extension would preserve the benefits of joint cooperation that derive from existing arrangements and permit further negotiations on a long-term agreement. If this proposal is acceptable to the Government of Canada, I propose further that this note, together with Your Excellency’s note in reply, shall constitute an agreement between our two Governments to extend the Interim Agreement, which shall enter into force on the date of Your Excellency’s note in reply.
